Group Therapy Houston Concert reviews
Steve & Martin - forgettable!
I was thrilled when I heard about this comedic duo, two legends sharing the same bill. A diverse range of characters and Martin, well, he's Group Therapy! The brief film illustrated the amazing talents of these two, but unfortunately, they completely wasted a 90-minute opportunity. I thought it could be interesting, seeing the set with 2 lounge chairs, as it was billed as a "conversation." Last year, I saw Al Pacino in a brilliant casual chat with a moderator. The show only used the chairs for a short 10-minute segment of off-the-cuff chit-chat. The rest of the time was spent on pretend insults, audience participation with 3 drunks, and a filmed segment of Martin's appearance on the tonight show, which was funny but not what I paid for. The only highlights were Steve Martin's bluegrass band and his touching tribute to Robin Williams on the banjo. The show ended with a shtick piece about being contractually obligated to perform for 5 more minutes, making it feel like it had just begun. The venue was too big for this type of performance, which would have been better in a smaller theater setting over multiple shows. However, it seemed that the economics of greed prevailed in filling the large space for this theatrical production. Overall, I was very disappointed.
